Known as the wisest man who ever lived, Solomon was also quite wealthy. He had lots of gold and other riches which, according to the text, he received from other nations. As a result of this, he created taxes in order to help pay for all of the things he received. This created discontentment among the people as it was too burdensome for them.
What is another reason for people paying taxes during biblical times? – The results of war was another reason why people paid taxes. If a foreign nation took over another nation, that nation who lost, had to pay taxes in most cases. This was the case between King Jehoiakim of Judah and Pharaoh Necho. The king of Judah had to pay taxes of gold and silver to Pharaoh Necho. He took this currency from the people in order to do this.
Why was Jesus asked if it was right to pay taxes to Caesar? – He was asked this question because his people at the time were under Roman occupation and they were tired of it. They wanted to know if it was lawful to pay taxes to another nation that was nothing like their own. But, this question was also asked to trap him. Jesus told them to give to Caesar the tax money that belonged to him.
